The ultra Bor high speed steel drill is designed to outperform cobalt drills in work hardening stainless steel applications. The ultra Bor's performance advantage is the result of the material it is produced from and the construction of the drill. These ultra Bor high speed steel drills are produced from a special hi-moly steel and then the flutes are nitro-carburized, which is a hardening process at low temperatures to minimize any distortion. The combination of hi-moly steel and nitro-carburized flutes allows the drill to have a thinner web compared to a cobalt drill. A thinner web means the ultra Bor drill will penetrate the work hardening steel fast enough to continually cut beneath the chip which is hardening from deformation, meaning the drill is cutting softer material. These high speed steel drills also feature a flatter point to produce smaller chips, meaning all the torque is directed to a smaller area allowing for drilling of materials with a hardness over 30 on the Rockwell "C" scale. The smaller chips also means the drill these drills run at cooler temperatures as there is less friction.
